On April 6, 2022, David Reimann was in the Winnebago County Jail after being arrested on April 1 by Rockford Police officer Andrew Hartman on a DUI charge. He was housed alone in a cell in one of the jail’s medical wings.
Although video footage was not released State’s Attorney J. Hanley said it showed that between 1:01 PM and 1:56 PM David was experiencing “medical issues” later reported to be a seizure. It wasn’t until 2:30 PM that Corrections Officer Curtis became concerned about his condition despite required 15-minute checks. He called for medical assistance and David was transported to Swedish American Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 4:33 PM. An autopsy by the Winnebago County Coroner determined the cause of death to be peritonitis caused by a ruptured duodenal ulcer.
This incident was the 26th case investigated and deemed justified by the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force, the 6th deadly force incident of the 2020s, and the 15th since Tom McNamara took office.
