On September 1, 2022, Peter Jaeger was involved in a domestic dispute during which his wife locked herself in a bathroom and called 911. She reported that he had been drinking, had a gun, and had threatened both her life and his own, and saying he was “ready to end it all.” Peter could be heard yelling in the background, and before police arrived, he went to open the garage door.
Rockford Police officers Carlitos Mctizic and Alexander Stone responded knowing Peter was armed and that his wife was barricaded in the bathroom, but they did not announce their presence. Stone entered through the garage and led Mctizic to a door into the home.
Inside, both officers saw Peter exit the bathroom area with his back to them. Stone observed a revolver in Peter’s hand at his waist, and when Peter began turning toward the officers, Stone fired four shots, killing him instantly.
This incident was the 29th case investigated and deemed justified by the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force, the 7th ruled under “suicide by cop,” the 9th deadly force incident of the 2020s, and the 18th since Tom McNamara took office.
