The Shooting of Jason Dimond

On September 26th, 2008, 911 calls reported a suicidal man with a gun inside an apartment at the Bienterra Trail Apartments. Jason Dimond was inside the unit.

Collin Kvoolo of the Rockford Police Department arrived around 2 PM with a maintenance worker who helped access the building. Officers knocked for several minutes before directing the maintenance worker to open the door.

Inside, officers reportedly found a knife and razor blade near a large pool of blood in the bathroom. They followed a blood trail to a closed room where Dimond was blocking entry by sitting against the door. Officers then gained entry through another door leading into the bedroom, where Dimond was armed with a replica AK-47.

It was alleged that Dimond pointed the replica rifle at officers, prompting them to open fire. Officer Collin Kvoolo shot Dimond once in the chest.

A standoff followed involving more than two dozen officers, including SWAT, snipers, and hostage negotiators. During this time, it was reported that Dimond was experiencing distress following receipt of divorce papers.

After approximately four hours, Dimond exited the apartment unarmed with his hands raised and was taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.

This was the 18th deadly force incident involving police in Winnebago County and the fourth such incident in 2008.
